In the Eastern direction from the town of Eger lies the village Cserépváralja, surrounded by the green hills of Bükk. At present a group of archeologists is examining this area in a sophisticated way to learn more about the forgotten history of this small stronghold.

According to the existing documents Cserépvár was established quite late in order to replace the neglected Gerennavár. King Zsigmond Luxemburgi donated it to the Rozgonyi family. In the middle ages among other families, the following families claimed the castle as a possession: Szomszédvári, Pohárnok and Báthory family.

Mainly it was a dominion's centre, as from military point of view the castle was outdated even during the Ottoman occupation. Cserépvár never was mentioned in the military chronicles, most of its remains were used for the construction of the nearby baroque mansion.

It is the history's grimace that even this mansion doesn't survive until our days, only the block of its chapel can be seen. If you arrive here from the village, situated in the valley, walk along the chapel's fences until the Castlehill, surrounded by trees. Here are the hidden remains of Cserépvár.

The local residents proudly tell even now, that during the revolution of 1848 the four-year-old Mihály Munkácsy was relocated here by his parents.
