History of Salgó castle

The castle of Salgó stands on one of the stip vulcanic top of the hill of Medves, which surrounds the town of Salgótarján. The experts try to make the popular tourist excursion destination known by archeological excavation and restoration, which were carried out in many stages since the 1980's.

SalgóWe learn more about its past from the comtemporary certificates and the discovered artifacts. In the XIII. century the earliest building, the stout old tower was built by the Kacsics landlord family on the top of the hill.

In 1320 they capitulated before the army of King Károly Anjoy and this way they could keep the ownership of the castle together with the services of the inhabitants of the neigbouring villages. In the autumn of 1554 the Turkish army easily occupied it and in 40 years later it was taken back by the King's army in a heavy battle. The winners blew its walls up, the conversation of which is still in process in our days.

The following legend is about the castle of Salgó. The advancing Turkish army towed a big tree trunk, lying on wheels to the opposite hilltop. Because of the steamy weather the chicken-hearted garrison believed it to be a cannon with tremendous fire power and gave up their position without any fights.
